The original spring racing trend setter and ‘It girl’, Jean
Shrimpton caused quite a stir when she arrived at the
Melbourne Cup in 1965. In a time when skirt lengths
were long, shoulders were covered and stockings and
gloves were a must, Jean stepped out in an above the
knee shift dress without stockings, gloves or a hat!
While the press wrote negative stories about her that
year, the following carnival everyone was wearing short
dresses, and globally she was known as the girl who
started the miniskirt trend.
Be inspired by Jean’s ever-classic 1960’s silhouette and
opt for a shift dress in a plain colour. Wear a modern
hat, simple pumps or sandals and a structured clutch
bag for timeless appeal.
